Description: Contemporary Issues in Officership: A Canadian Perspective examines the challenges faced by the Canadian Officer Corps as a result of the turbulent changes of the post-Cold War era. The book’s central theme is that the Canadian Forces must place a greater focus on education and intellectual development to prepare its officers for the ambiguity, uncertainty and rapid pace of change that they face in operations. Concomitant with this theme is the premise that within the Canadian Forces an anti-intellectual culture and a failure to emphasize continuing education as a central pillar of professional development, as well as an adherence to outdated leadership models, has resulted in a failure to anticipate or adapt to the major external changes that have occurred in the last decade. The societal, geo-political, technological and operational revolutions have transformed not only how the Canadian Forces conduct operations but also how they are perceived and held accountable by the public they serve. "We cannot forecast what the world will look like in twenty years, but we can ensure that the Canadian officers of tomorrow have the mental acuity, the intellectual depth and breadth, as well as a progressive and insightful military ethos that will permit them to deal with whatever ambiguity and complexity they will face. The challenge is clear. Hopefully, this book will serve as a catalyst to start such a renaissance." Lieutenant-Colonel Dr. Bernd Horn is a serving officer in the Canadian Forces. At the time of publication, he was the Chief of Staff to the Special Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Staff on Professional Development.
